Memory Care HERstory

I’m Andrea Milligan, and I’m the memory care director here at Gentry Park Senior Living.

In honor of Women’s History Month, I want to take a moment to celebrate Kim, one of our neighborhood residents!

Kim’s parents immigrated from Sicily, and she was raised in New Hampshire. Kim chose to go into the Air Force because, as a female, she wasn’t afforded the opportunity to attend college. While in the Air Force, Kim worked as a personal secretary for two lieutenant colonels. After her time in the service, Kim worked at the University of Indiana as a secretary for the School of Education.

I feel it’s important to honor the stories of those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, because they lose so much of who they once were. It is our responsibility to provide them dignity by celebrating them as the unique individuals that they are.

In the Gentry Park Neighborhood, we connect individuals living with dementia to their personal history through engagement, reminiscing, and by providing cues about their past. With these techniques, we are able to trigger memories and feelings of those living with dementia.
