In many cases United States Veterans may be able to access benefits to help pay for senior living. We’ve put together some highlights but we encourage you to check with your local Veteran’s Administration office and your preferred senior living community for more details.
There are a number of benefits US veterans and their spouses may be able to access that may help them pay for senior living. It is important to understand the benefits and eligibility criteria while exploring these benefits.
There are two primary benefits available through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that may help cover the costs of moving into a senior living community.
The Aid and Attendance Benefit for veterans is a monthly pension benefit that may be used to pay for senior living.
The housebound allowance is for eligible veterans who receive a pension and spend much of their time at home due to a permanent disability.
Visit the VA website to learn more about each of these benefits.
Your veteran’s benefits can be used for a variety of care, including care in the home by home health aides, as well as Assisted Living. To be eligible, you may need to meet certain income and asset thresholds. For more comprehensive/higher levels of care, you must need assistance in two areas of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, or assistance eating.
To be eligible for VA pension which may help pay for your senior living community, you must not have received a dishonorable discharge, and you must maintain an annual family income and net worth that meets limits set by Congress. The VA itself does not pay for your senior living community but may be able to assist with other services. Again, it is important to check with your VA office and senior living community.
