Gentry Park Senior Living Invites You to Celebrate National Good Neighbor Month in Their Neighborhood

Category: Memory Care

Author: Andrea Milligan, Memory Care Director

September is “National Good Neighbor Month,” and in the spirit of this special time, we would like to take the opportunity to share about a unique part of our senior living community – our Memory Care Neighborhood.

Here at Gentry Park Senior Living we strive to make our Neighborhood a special place, not just for our residents, but for everyone who comes to visit and join in our daily festivities. We celebrate being good neighbors every day.

We call our Memory Care communities “Neighborhoods” because we strive to create a sense of belonging, safety, and familiarity. We provide opportunities for our residents to help one another, socialize together, and safely explore their surroundings. We encourage family members to visit and participate as often as possible. Oftentimes, family members form bonds with other residents in our Neighborhood and they begin to look out for them just as they do their own loved one. We welcome those extra sets of eyes and ears, and it goes a long way in providing the best care possible for our residents.

Our goal is to create an environment that gives our residents a sense of well-being. We want to set the stage for them to be able to live their best lives, even while living with memory loss. We do this by establishing a daily routine of socialization, engagement, nutrition, and rest. Our knowledgeable and understanding care partners provide our residents the security and confidence to be themselves.

It is just as important to us to care for the families of our residents. Oftentimes, families need support in navigating the disease process. Providing education, support groups, and inviting families to be active participants in our Neighborhood are some of the ways we offer support to our resident’s families.

September is also Alzheimer’s month. There are many ways to be a “good neighbor” to those living with memory loss during Alzheimer’s month. One way would be to support your local branch of the Alzheimer’s Association. They can tell you about volunteer opportunities, help you get involved in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s or train you to be a support group facilitator. Not only do these programs and events raise funds for research, but they also help to spread awareness of the disease. The more educated and aware the community is the more support we can offer to those living with memory loss and their caregivers.

We encourage everyone to be a “good neighbor” and find ways to engage and make a difference in the lives of individuals living with dementia. You don’t need to have a special talent, just a heart for others around you. If you would like more information about volunteering in a Memory Care Neighborhood near you or if you are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, we would love to help!
